As you suspected, it is glued onto the trunk. The roughly C shape is pointed to the outside. The strip attaches to the flat lip around the trunk. I have one photo of a trunk in my files but it's probably too far away. If this info is not clear enough and you need a closeup, I can run out there and take them for you.
