Hey Paul,
I did the same master swap to my '62 Belvedere. At my local NAPA
dealer, I asked for a '67 b-body (Belvedere or Coronet) master WITH drum
brakes front and rear. If my memory serves me correctly, there is a
difference in the seals used so residual pressure is maintained in the
drum system. I think you are correct with your assumption about the
rears locking up first with the wrong master. A disc master may be
valved differently as well, but I guessing on that one.
Just went through my bills for the car and came up with a part number of
10-1323. This would be a non-power assist master cylinder.

Follow-up question:
How do I double check before I install the replacement that it is
different
than the one in my car? Is there a way to tell if the parts store gives
me the
wrong type again?
Also, regarding theory, is my assumption correct that if you put a front
disc type master cylinder in a car with drums front and back, that it
will lock
up the rear brakes way before the front brakes?
