old style 2 pump 727

I've been trying for 2 days to get this post
thru...maybe this time.
To remove the retaining pin for the L/R band
actuating lever it is necessary to remove the parking
brake cable assembly housing right ? Then I can see
what looks like 1/4 X 20 threads in the end of the pin
(barely !). Did a special tool have to be used to back
the pin out into the trans case? Can I use a shop made
tool like a long bolt or a piece of all thread to do
this? All of this is to get to the piston spring so I
can finish up with my Transgo kit install. I need help
here...I don't want to bugger something up when I'm
this close to being done (this is last thing).
