Everythging Earl said is valid. I hone my lifter bores with a flex hone. I drill oil drip holes above each cam lobe (Ie 400 cheapie and the lemans 400 have this mod. I think that it helps oil to drip directly on the lobe.I do not use multi grade oils . The EDM hole lifters are an excellant idea. D some folks use a lifter bore notcher. lifter bores are often overlooked by builders as they dont think about it. Often when a block returns if you yake a new lifter andshove it in each hole two or theree will be stiff. like the said before it has to be free to rotate. My friend Greg Bolt used Shubeck ceramiclifters in his OR build. They are excellant , even bullet proof, but EXPENSIVE, maybe too exensive to justify their use. Here is what happened to me when i lost my cam and is is my only cam failure ever. I used Momma Mopar dual springs for over 520 lift. solid . i still have the box here but i forgot the part number . Since it was only my street motor i didnt worry about super duper testing since i knew they would be fine with the right spring heights. Boy did I get a surprise. the cam failed the day after i fired it. (it was idling too but I did brak it is right. it had by then abolut 3 hours running. I was mistified. I began searching and decided to scheck the spring pressure.i removed a sping in car and set it on my spring testing for BB Mopar jig. I cant remember exact but open pressure was about 420# (should have bee just above 300#) and seat pressure well above 130 which is the upper limit a flat tappet cam can stand. (120 would be better). I was mad. Mad at myself for not testing the pressue when i had the eqiupment right here to do so.Mad at Momma mopar for making such a spring. I had to say those dreaded words. I WAS WRONG!!!!! (generally even new springs ie Cc are 10% below rated specs out of the box. They are usually in the tolerance range but never in centre or above) My solution was to test the springs without the inner spring and the spec was acceptable so they are now single springs and doing a fine job. (Yes i did machine my heads for dual spring in case you were wondering) My guess is some single springs for up to 540 lift got mixed in with some dual sets and assembled that way. If I had repeated cam failures i would check that right away. you should be able to compress the spring from the seatat least a bit byand. if not it is probably too high a pressure. Dont have a spring pressure tester? Are you sure? You have a drill press(or a vice), a ruler and a bathroom scale dont you.? That will work very well. Acceptable spring presssures ? 120 to 125 seat and 300 to 340 at max lift. (340 is pushing it too but doable with care) Don Author of Return to Deutschland (True Adventure) Old Reliable (Mopar) http://stores.ebay.ca/Don-Dulmage-Enterprises http://seniordragster.bravehost.com/index.html [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ---- Please address private mail -- mail of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
