Grounding the 2nd field terminal on a Denso alt

I'm trying to find out some information on the new "Denso" alternators. I
have one off of a early 90's D150 with the two field terminals. Is it
possible to ground one of the field terminals, and use it with a single field wire
connection? That's the procedure with one of the squareback alternators, but
I'm curious if it would work in this situation.
My goal is to keep the stock looking voltage regulator. It has the solid
state internals, but only one field wire.
As I understand it, the old style regulators meter the flow of electricity
to the alternator. While the late model regulators regulate the ground side.
I'm not much of whiz at electrical theory, so I'm a little leery of the
"hook-it-up-and-try-it" method (assuming the alternator will even bolt up to the
engine).
Any help would be appreciated....
