Neal,
The spacers I think your referring to are called buttons by a lot of
people. If you look at your third member where the axles go into
the carrier, you will see a small hole in the middle if the buttons
are not there. You will need to use a flash light, if they are there,
you will know why they are called buttons. They are just stops for
both axles to rest against. The purpose is to make sure the Timken
bearings have the right load. Hence the axle adjuster on the pass
side. If your using green bearings, then there is no need for them.

well somebody was just talking about this a few weeks ago, i think it
might have been Don Dumage. they were talking about how they often stick to
the axle when u are pulling out the axle. I dont know, i cant see anything
like this in my pile of rears, hoping i havent lost them.
