my heater valve failed along time ago, and was rusted out pretty bad.
so, I had it welded up, and ran a cable out to an inline valve I  
installed
in the heater hose inlet side. It works great except the lever on the  
dash
now works backwards. that was about 15 years ago and no leaks. but
you should be able to get it fixed properly now a days. I think there's
some info on the websites tech/restoration section.
