You say 780 holley i am assuming you actually mean a 750 or 3310 series with vacuum secondary. tis probably the worlds best carbauretor
so , get a secondary conversion plate from holley . Everybody sells it .It starts with 34R i think for the number and allows this holley to use standard jets both pri and sec rather thanthe non-tunable cast plate. . There is no power valve in the secondary . install per instruction but put the supplied 76 jets in the primary and get a set of 79 or 80s for the secondary side.
Install a 4.5 (sometimes you can get 5.0 but not often so use the 4.5) power valve in the primary side . Set the accel pump with clearance a full throttle.
So Why does it have to have clearance (when pushed down by hand at full throttle)? So it wont tear the pump diaphram. otherwise the diaphragm is being forced to stretch bigger than it is made and will eventually fail.
Accel pump should be right there anytime the throttle is moved from idle.
Reinstall stock as delivered squiter. Set the floats . if the secondaries are too slow for your liking. throw the little check ball away and pull the stock spring back through itself with a gentle tug and reinstall. Put a bit of Wd 40 on the diaphram near the screws so it will slip and not drag on the screws and befcome twisted or distorted. I like to put the stem of the diaphragm though the bottom have of the secondary vacumm piece and clamp the stem gently in the vise in a neutral position then install the upper part as required.
That should take care of the carb despite the unothadox suggestions it will work very well.
next we need to tackle the distributor. first forget about the vacuum advance. you cant use it as you already have too much advance available.
if it is the new mopar distributotor with the adjustable advance curve and the two torx heads screws. adjust it so you have no more than 2/3 total advance as would be available at full position. Set the timing at 32 to 34 degrees at 3000 rpm. Dont even look at idle timing . it is not important and will only confuse you. Tell your chevy friend who is trying to help you to buzz off. and continue on this path. if you dont have an adjustable timing light cut a piece of paper 2.21 inches long . Find someone with a set of caliphers if you have to to measure this piece.
lay the paper on the damper with one end at the tdc slot and the other end towards the drivers side. (oil pump side) of the engine. Using whiteout from your wife's typewriter mark the pulley at the end of the paper . that is 32 degrees and 34 would be just a wisker more . Your normal cheapie timing ligt will, now work just fine.
Plug the vacuum advance with a rubber carb plug so all the bowtie boys wont keep asking "hey mister , how come you dont have the vaccum advance hooked up?" Hop in a fasten you seat belt cause yer now ready ta bOOOOOOOOOOGIEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
