from what I understand is what you are doing is ok. When you say the
plates are cleared, what do you mean? My understanding is that the
donor car had to be declared "dead" to the DMV, and thus making those
plates available. 63 was the first year of the Black plate/yellow
lettering AFAIK. If your car is a 63, I can't see why it would be a
problem unless of course the plates aren't cleared. I know several
other people that have these plates. I can ask them directly if you
like.

Thanks for the helpful info. I'm trying to get these plates n a 1968
vehicle. The plates are "cleared" meaning they are not currently registered to any
car. The '68 vehicle is currently registered and has the normal white
Calif. plates on them. Today, the DMV tried telling us that since the plates are
stamped '63, we can only use them on a '63 vehicle. We explained that the
black/yellow letter plates were all stamped '63 and were used through '68 or
'69. But they wouldn't listen. They want verification that these plates were
originals off the '68 car, which they're not.
