We are currently playing with a 400 stroked to 426.
3.53 stroke .
Stock 400 pistons can be used and they will be at or close to .00 deck.

(We are making ours from 440 cores as this is a full race engine , roller , alum heads etcetc but the original idea was to take a 400 block and make an easily duplicated inexpensive engine that would produce good power. )

With a hydraulic cam in the 525 to 533 range for lift (minor flycutting of piston would be necesary over 520 )
and duration at .050 around 253 deg and a decent set of iron heads (2.14/181 with pocket porting and ccing to 80 ccs) and proper springs, 500 plus hp should be easily attained.
Crank is the biggest expense. We use a 383 steel core and it costs about $350 Canadian to stroke it to 3.53.
The rest is all normal stuff.
These 400 motors are surprising when given a chance . The 400 may be the sleeping giant of the mopar camp.
With a stroke not much different from a sb bowtie they will rev all day without hurting themselves. The huge bores sure help breathing, but the smaller cubes cut the iron heads a bit of slack.
