I started with 1.5" PVC pipe for my shop air setup. One of the paint supply
manufacturers has a shop air routing diagram which can be downloaded. The
diagram has some very good suggestions concerning methods to trap and drain
water. I did have a pipe rupture with the PVC that created a big mess. When
I get the time I plan to get rid of the PVC for something better. At the
very minimum I recommend using iron pipe for the first few feet from the
compressor. In a nutshell the PVC ruptured near the outlet part of my 60 gal
compressor and sort of made a missile out of my compressor. I think PVC is
OK to use as long as it is securely fastened with no stress points. Don

I also used pvc, but half inch. Easy to use, but I DO get some water to
my blast cabinet, even with a trap on the compressor AND on the cabinet.
Never had any problem with water in my paint gun, but I use an orange
ball trap on the gun.
