My 1963 Service Man. says (and I quote!)..."I.D. of Sure Grip diff assembly can be made by the letter "S" stamped on the I.D. pad on the right side of the carrier housing, or by a metal tag reading "Use Sure-grip Lube" attached by means of the rear axle housing-to-carrier bolt, below the carrier filler plug. If the letter "S" or the tag is not apparent, remove the filler plug and use a flashlight to look up through the filler plug hole to ID the type of case. The Sure Grip type diff. case (two piece construction) has attaching bolts. The conventional type diff case (one piece construction) has a dome-like shape with no case cap attaching bolts"

So sayeth the Book !

Hope this helps

If I recall correctly, older 8-3/4 rear ends have the ratio stamped on

Where is the number stamped? Also, doesn't the number have a prefix for
a suregrip?

there is a pad on the bottom right of the carrier, near the rear of it (away from the pinion yoke). and by right, I mean pass. side. sometimes they are stamped, othertimes they are stamped so lightly, its hard to make 'em out. SG's did have some other sort or prefix or suffix, I can't remember what, but it is sez 2.93 and nothing else figure it to be a non-SG. most SGs were 742s in those years, and unless its in a truck or its a 225 car, mostlikely its a 2.93:1,,, perhaps a 3.23:1

good luck.
