That is the problem when un-elected bureaucrats become defacto fascists , dedicated  to saving us from ourselves (even if we don't need or want to be saved).  The importation of American cars to Australia hurts no one, but Big Brother knows best.

I have a friend in Australia that I have sent parts for his American cars, and the shipping regulations are absurd.  Too bad it happened to such a lovely country and people.

Well while we are looking at auto salvage USA I have just bought a 1962 Plymouth Belvedere Station Wagon 318 V8 Poly Auto through a mate which is a restoration project in Massachusetts. Restoration is my hobby and I do the lot myself not for money but for myself. I bought a Cadillac in 2007 and a Rolls in 2010 imported both without problems. The freight for the Rolls in 20 foot container out of New Jersey to Brisbane was $3750 USD. My shipper now wants $11,450 to send the Plymouth. Quite an increase. Worse still Australian Border Force after not doing anything for 13 years with a law that prohibits the importation of ANY asbestos started to beat its chest and become a nuisance around 2016 and commenced seizing cars, testing them and fineing people to "protect us" So now I need an asbestos tester in Massachusetts to inspect the car before its shipped here and they have to be Nata Certified.The Australia Border Force says it doesn't want to unduly penalise importers of classic cars but that's exactly what its doing. And predictably a number of operators have jumped up and said look for a pile of money we can make it easy to import, we have a tester in California etc. 

My point is that when you are cruising the old salvage yards of USA you need to do a lot of sums and jump through a lot of hoops to get your treasured US find home to Australia
