Re: ammeter bypass

Hi all,

although my mopar experience is a bit limited, I'll give an opinion.

I agree that routing all the charging current through the bulkhead is a bit of gambling. Although clean contacts, a not-so-big alternator and connecting additional current sinks on the alternator side, not the battery side (so you only route charging current and not all the supply current through the bulkhead..) is acceptable in my point of view.

A voltmeter has advantages in letting you guess how often you can try to start the car before calling road service. The ammeter lets you guess while still driving whether you'll make it home.

I just made a new engine wiring harness and put new fuses on the bulkead, both with a new wiring to the ammeter (slightly larger but not too big), and on the bulkhead these fuses will lead to battery and alternator.
I hope this keeps me save, adds a fuse in a critical point and bypasses the bulkhead connector.
Contrary is that it doesn't look original at all.

Best regards,
Thomas

Wondering how many of you have done this? I have read the  MAD electrical article  a few times, but  then surfing around on the internet some people say it's all bunk, or it's not necessary on the early mopars.
I don't know what to make of it anymore.
