On American-built 1964 A body cars the Shipping Order Number appears on the
data tag under the hood and on the the radiator crossmember.  The SON on the
radiator crossmember also has the year and assembly plant code.  It is
usually hidden by the antifreeze sticker but can be seen from underneath the
crossmember with the use of a mirror.

On Canadian-built 1964 A body cars there are no cross-reference numbers
stamped on the body and the data tag does not have an SON.

The engines and transmissions also have no numbers stamped on them to tie
them with the cars in which they were installed.. The engine number stamped
into the block would give you the date the engine was assembled, which
should be a couple of months or so prior to the scheduled build date.   The
transmission has the part number stamped on the driver's side of the case
just above the oil pan rail.  Not sure what year they started doing it
(sometime in the 1960's), but the date of assembly follows the part number.

The VIN did not appear on the engine block until mid-1968 in some cases and
on the transmission in 1969.  1969 was also the year they began stamping the
VIN on the data tag.
