He and a friend of his built a 400 (cheap) and it turned out to be better than expected. The 400 is a good engine, has a good bore to stroke ratio. Dennis Robert neal zimmerman <northwestweirdo@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: OK, this is sure to stir up a hornets nest, the lowly low block, the 400. It is hard for me to find the 440, i have only found one around here, but at the same time I know where three EARLY 1971 or 1972 400 engines are and one ofthose still has its original bore. The price is much less too. In one book I have "Big block MopAR PERFORMANCE" BY cHUCK sENATORE he says some pretty intersting stuff about the lowly 400. A) The block is stout and can take the punishment of over 650 horsepower, whereas the 440 cant. B) He claims " any engine that can be built in a 440 block can be built better in the low-deck 400 cid block. This is due to the 400s shorter deck height, which allows for a lighter piston". C)You can turn down a 440 crank and get a 451, turn down the rod journals and yield a472 or use an aftermarket 4.15 stroke crank and get a 496. D) He says the 451 combo is basically a 440 with a lighter set of pistons, and therefore "expect to gain about one to two tenths of a second over the same combination in a 440." E) The 400 is slightly lighter and affords u more engine compartment room and hood clearance because its slightly smaller What gives- I always thought these were crappy motors that your grandpa had in his Cordoba.
