hiya, broken spring would have no effect on anything. it may just be spring 
and timing went out same time .  im thinking if retime engine you will be back 
in business, least i hope thats all. 
   if your engine is high miler then, it may be that your timing sprockets 
and chain worn and loose. if so, engine will always run erratic up until jumps a 
full tooth , then will not start at all.  watch timing marks when timing 
light is on them and see if vary .
