I used a propane torch and gently, carefully warmed the surface. The
undercoating gets a little gooey so it can be scraped off.
Then I went after it with steel wool, rags and lacquer thinner. It came out
like new. I did let the tank sit with the sending unit and filler neck
removed for a few months so that the fuel evaporated. I did not use a
lighter to se if there was any fuel left in the tank. I emerged unscathed
with all limbs intact. Mike 63 330

I'm thinking the tanks were a funny looking zinc dip.

---------------------

I just cleaned the original tank from my 65 and
that's exactly what it was. It was pretty tough
stuff. A lot of wire brushing only got about
5% of it off. The rest is still there, so I painted
over it with POR-15.

I think that Eastwood has a zinc looking paint
that may be close to the original color. Mine
will probably end up being gray metal finish
paint mostly because I have some.
