RE: {Chrysler 300} P/s pump difference for 1960

The following video is for entertainment purposes and is NOT intended for 300 cars - unless you're desperate. However, it does feature one of the world's best cars! And may provide inspiration for those looking for a cheap and simple power steering fix for their hot-rodded / rat-rodded cars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Os8byiAgUQ

My beastie has the manual box which isn't that heavy to steer, so I'll keep it standard and simple.

Cheers

Henry

Subject: Re: {Chrysler 300} P/s pump difference for 1960

I am interested too , in 300 PS pumps in general .I second where Dave is going
I had a rebuilt ps pump in a 57 seize recently, assume the original 57 style pump , seized 15 minutes after first start of engine, took out belts etc. Lucky in garage not on toad . All nice and silver from rebuilder (done before I got the car, never started )
I trust Carmen at steer and gear he did maybe a dozen F pumps for me over the years , no problems ,ever
The first thing i ever did to a 300F was figure out a kit using a shoulder bolt and spacer pipe to get rid of dumb bouncing betty PS mount on F , but F pumps in general are ok . All mine were the same . Maybe , Dave , someone changed your pump?
I think they put out 900 to 1100 psi . The earlier coaxial box ( i know in 57,58 , was it in 55,56 59?) I think 59 had F type pump but not sure .
So I went to rebuild the 57 ( again) at S &G ,brief exchange , Carmen told me 57 pumps are a dog, he has changed them for later " Thompson " pumps on Chryslers . That means nothing to me , ( still means nothing) maybe they fit the hemi bracket?
I understand the coaxial pumps ( like 57 ) put out 600-800 psi , not sure what this "Thompson " puts out , so backed off.
In interim I had two other 57 style pumps in junk pile , threw one on it works, but after belt seizure I am wary . But used / broken in might be better , unmessed with , and if no seal leaks why not ? Seizure is usually too tight? Don't rebuild if working ? to get new silver paint and new problems is the takeaway on that . Replace seals?
So I have converted several non stock cars to GM saginaw pump , they are plentiful and bulletproof.
I have not seen a dual pulley for them ( solvable) , two styles fyi press on pulley and keyway / nut . May be other variations around metric .
They put out about 1000 psi .
But so popular with hot rod guys , Speedway ( add others ) make a replacement pressure regulator that goes to 600 to use with Ford / Mustang 2 racks, . Should work with co axial box I have one on a baby Dodge hemi in a 50 studebaker business coupe ( way cool car), mustang rack . Fits in front of head Thinking of adapting to 392 with 600 psi setup .
The pressure regulator is part of outlet fitting , 2 minutes to change Speedway makes a banjo outlet fitting , it turns outlet on back 90 degrees, can set any angle 90 degrees to belt and tight to pump back That is a Great Idea.! As mopar hemi head is right there Maybe some one knows what pumps are on what years 300 and how they differ or ?whatever ?
Chrysler used several suppliers , across car lines, must have had problems , 57 dodges had Vickers pumps total dog , 600 to rebuild That car has Saginaw now , brand new Saginaw pumps are under 100 $
I get stock , ok,.. but this data needs organization? And fitting info etc?

Good question , Dave
jkg

ps, these were early days of PS , driven by GM , many if not most cars had manual steering in late 50's . So one can understand early problems as PS slowly became the normal set up Look at Ford, brutally bad setup with cylinder on the steering tie rod
