--Hi All,
I have a problem, and I am looking for suggestions. Rear quarter panel clips.
I have both good original and new identical clips. The problem is the wind lace. I had an upholsterer make up the lace with the material I wanted. I then took what was left of the factory cardboard and made new “cardboard” out of a flexible plastic material so it would not rot over time like the thin factory stuff. It was the same thickness or a little less.
I then used contact adhesive to affix the two legs of the wind lace to the plastic. When done it looked like a new part.
Now the problem. I cannot get the spring clips to pop into the hole. If I am not careful, I will screw up the new upholstery. I suspect that the wind lace material x2 and the plastic its just thick enough that the panel will not go down enough for them to pop through.
So, has anyone used the newer plastic type with the multiple round “teeth” so that it will grab as it goes down and then stop?
Any other suggestions? I really do not want to pull the rivets and rework the wind lace. The door will not be an issue as there is not any wind lace on the doors side. One car friend said since it is a driver and not a concourse car, I should just put 4 rivet nuts in the holes and just screw them down for a positive fit. Particularly since this is a hard top and a lot of my friends are older and bigger. Screws with finish washers would make sure that big folks getting in and out would not pull that quarter panel away from the webbing.
In any event. Suggestions?
James
