RE: {Chrysler 300} Public availability of letter car data

I don’t have a problem with the data being available for the public to read and understand. The more familiar people are with the rarity of our cars, the better. My problem is when that data is used in commercial speech, aka advertising or promotion. Cardinal Classics should have attempted to obtain the club’s permission before associating the name of the club with their sales pitch. Which, TBH, I hope will never be granted to any business.

I understand Ron's point; however, this is publically available data on our club web pages:  SERIAL NUMBER REGISTRY

It would be based on the number of cars known to the club, and might be a bit out of date, although Bob does update the page periodically.

This gets into the question of how much data should be publically available on the web pages vs. that which should only be available to dues paying club membership.

Trying to password protect the club web pages for "members only" viewing is not really that effective, and I for one would not like us to implement something like "paywall" technology to limit public access to the site (and also unsure of how complicated that would be from a technology perspective).  Part of our mission on the club web pages is to educate and promote interest in our favorite cars and the club to the general public.  Even the listserver posts are publically accessible via the forwardlook site.  On the other hand, there has to be sufficient incentive and "members only" information available to draw new members and retain existing members in the club - benefits that would not be available to the public.  For example, the letter car VIN/owner list, or the build card data, both of which are not publically available on the club web pages.  The meets alone should be enough incentive to join the club, but what do I know.

I know that the officers and the board are aware of the issue, and with their collective wisdom can determine the appropriate direction as specific issues arise.

I tend to have a problem when a business starts quoting our club concerning ‘how many left’ statistics, in an effort to make a sale. I think a ‘cease and desist’ letter may be in order.
