Re: {Chrysler 300} Electrical fuel pump

Might as well add my two cents worth. I have supplemental electric pumps on all our collector cars. Two reasons; much easier starting after setting for a length of time, and especially with the pre-WWII cars, adding fuel when the original pumps vapor lock in hot weather. I used to have them run all the time and still do on numerous cars, but in the last 15 years, I mount them so they are 'switched". Electric pumps are better "pushers" than "pullers", so mount them as close to the tank as possible. I like both the Facet "square cube" pumps and the Facet "orange juice can" (the old Bendix) style pumps. I still find the Bendix style pumps to be the most reliable. Only one I ever had fail had been on six different cars over a 35 year period. I am not so sure about using a 1.5 psi pump, as I have found many times that is not enough pressure to lift the mechanical pump vales off their seats to let fuel flow to the carburetor.

My choices; Facet 40106 12 volt, 4.5-6.0 psi,  Square Cube
Facet 476087 12 volt, 4.0-5.0 psi Orange Juice Can (Bendix) style.

I have also used Airtex electric pumps with reasonable success as "starting only " pumps. I would not recommend them for continuous usage.

Always make sure you have a filter on the inlet side of the electric pump.

Joe Jordan put a new Edelbrock electric fuel pump on my F over the past winter, to replace the one I’d been running for the past 80,000+ miles. The first new one he installed was defective, so had to install a second one. I’ve run this new one 2,500+ miles this season, with no issues.

By the way my supplementary pumps have not been switched, but run thru the engine’s fuel pump full time.

Just wanted to add, The existing mechanical pump stays in place and pulls through the priming pump once started.

Agree with Danny, I’ve had one on my G for at least 15 years that I got from John Lazenby, and a different style before it. They really are necessary if the car sits for more than a week due to gas evaporation.  Install with a push button switch. Turn the key on, push button until pulsations slow, then crank over.  Simple, effective, no cranking, cranking, cranking.  As John G mentioned, some folks think the cranking helps pump oil before firing and beneficial. Personally, I don’t agree, unnecessary wear on the battery and starter.  Besides, if you did want to crank it without priming, you’d still have that option, just don’t push the button.  As far as opening the hood, unscrewing the air cleaner, pouring gas in the carb…what a pain, and a bit dangerous.

You want a Facet cube pump. Its a little cube, pumps 1.5 psi and perfect for priming. John Lazenby installed one on my F when he owned it.

The Facet will pump through the mechanical pump. I run it until she starts and then turn it off. Google a Facet 1.5 psi and it will pop right up.

The electrical fuel pump on my 61G gave way and started leaking.  This pump was installed prior to my purchasing the car.  I only turn it on for about 20 sec. prior to starting the car and then turn it off.

Question.....Is this something really necessary (I did replace the mechanical pump about a year ago)?  If so, what would be a good replacement and what would the required GPM and PSI  (there is no notation on the pump to go by.)

See attached for what was installed by a previous owner.
