Robert, I got to cruise around in that car too with John probably in 2009 or so at Chrysler Carlisle.  I loved that car.  

I restored a factory manual transmission and kept it stock.  The gearing, even in first was so tall that it would be easy to burn the clutch, even starting on a level surface.  Loading on a trailer was impossible, you'd have to get a running start or you would just burn the clutch up.  

So not having synchro definitely has always been a little bit of a head scratcher to me.  The cars were designed for running 1 mile.The cars were designed for running 1 mile hops at very high speed so I guess they weren't thinking about downshifts.
