Lindsey, Smarter folks will be along soon I'm sure. Until then I'll ask you is the backfire coming from under the hood or in back of the car? I ask because backfires from the carburetor are typically a lean fuel mixture and a carburetor or fuel system issue. On the other hand a backfire through the exhaust is generally indicative of a ignition problem. For example, crossed wires carbon tracking in cap. But the most common backfire through exhaust comes from crappy ignition condensers. John Grady can expound on that.
