James: By the way, did you have a reason to use mineral oil rather than ester oil? Ester oil will work with R12 and R134, would have allowed you to charge with 134 if you elected to do that. With mineral oil, you know you cannot. Dan From: James Douglas [mailto:jdd@xxxxxxxxxx] Could be… The only two ships I have found in Northen California that do this work on classic cars both said they had too many to many issues switching cars over and they prefer to use R12. Since I have everything rebuilt, a RV2 compressor, and it is on and full of mineral oil, I really do not want to have to clean everything out for the other oil. Other than the environmental issues, what is the downside to R12? James From: dplotkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx <dplotkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> James- I'm with John Grady on this. You are making an error using R12 and my bet is you will regret it. I have 6 antiques with factory air. We hear experts say that 134 does not cool as well as R12, or not as well because of steel condensers and all kinds of other conventional wisdom that isn't. 2 of them are on 12 because in 20 years of owning them they have never needed to be evacuated, just topped off. If and when either do, they will be filled with 134. I have a 62 Bonneville with a steel condenser with 134 that delivers 38-42 degrees all summer regardless of ambient or dew point. I have a 68 New Yorker, completely stock AC system on 134 that cools to Chrysler specs in the shop manual. It cools beautifully. R12 does not, in my experience, cool better than 134 when the system is in good order. I base this on 20+ years experience with air conditioned antique automobiles.
