Re: {Chrysler 300} 61 starter recommdations

the comment about timing is more important than it might seem . if it truly cranks ok cold , too much idle advance really shows up hot . Not sure why  that is . But absolutely the truth . And not mentioned , the way to sort this is measure starter amp draw to crank . The  loaded values are in fsm , but need special ammeter . I had a starter  with partial short where main lead passes through frame to inside , drove me crazy . clue was wires from battery got warm , but slow crank hot was result .

But even more of issue that  can lead to incorrect timing :

 — many of us do not realize vacuum advance on rams is not ported like it should be (!) It is straight manifold vacuum . if you look at ram service bulletins carefully they say disconnect and plug ( yes, always do that  —  ported or not ) but then go on to say that’ There is no spec for idle timing with advance connected” ( what?)
I think this is for sure a major design error , I chased this in carter carb book , — there is only one other car without ported vacuum in this period , it was dual quad red hot cam corvette  , has no vacuum anyway at idle . I can see that .

But rams develop vacuum ,  and that is then a function of rpm idle . Raise idle ( we often do ) you can get advance . Interact as more advance increases idle rpm . Leads to unstable idle speeds .

So if you do not read book carefully and accidentally set up timing with line connected who knows what you have .One might even say who knows what you have anyway ?
Related the advance canister for rams may be very special , not move (?) at idle , high threshold ? but then not move at moderate cruise too , equals terrible gas mileage ( we have seen that before) . Despite praise of wonderful engineering , the first long rams were half baked when taken out of the oven .
erratic  carb heat and this come  to mind —as  well as how much J changed . If  great design— why totally dumped in 62 , back in 63 ? greatly changed . w manual  choke?

No ported advance 60-61 ? why ? maybe because design of air valve screw AFB idle air would wreck critical calibration of a port slot just off idle ?  Ported works only if throttle plate is open a little bit . Not on rams . It is closed .
There is a reason ported advance was in every car made … to separate unneeded idle timing advance from light cruise , which is just off idle throttle opening where you need it ..,  for mileage .As port is uncovered on cruise , vacuum rises there  , advances timing to save gas . Then disappears at more throttle opening  for power , avoid detonation .
But - if idle timing  high during crank = fights starter .
just sayin , not answerin

I recall seeing a clip about high resistance found in a battery cable terminal end causing problems.  Have you checked to see if the voltage at the starter is the same as the battery while cranking?

If your starter is worn out/bad, why not get it reconditioned or replaced with another?

How many millions and millions of satisfactory hot starts have been made with these starters over the past 60 years?  Can the same be said of these new alternative starters?

Subject: {Chrysler 300} 61 starter recommdations

Hello all I got the G running and driving!  Finally.

It is very hard to start when hot, the starter barley turns the motor over.  Cranks fine cold, and I just put in a new group 27 battery.

It feels like the starter is tired.

Is there a high torque starter that will bolt onto the bellhousing?  I’m running the cast iron torqueflite.

Any recommendations?

Thanks Mike
