RE: {Chrysler 300} Headliner for 300D Coupe

Dad did have SMS make the material for the headliner.  I don’t the know details of the whole process, but he said they were a pain to deal with.  I went to our guy that does our upholstery work and he had some material left over.  He had a whole other piece of the waffle liner that was 61” long that I already promised to another club member.  Our guy couldn’t remember why he had an extra piece.  It possibly could be the piece appeared to have some blemishes on it and they sent him another piece.  The new piece is what is now in the 58.  Attached are pictures of the pieces of what’s left of the material he used in the car.  If someone is interested in me sending them a scrap to have something made, I would be more than happy to.  Although, I believe on the large piece that’s left in the picture, might just be enough to do another car.  Let me know and I can get measurements.

As far as the chrome trim pieces, I don’t recall him tracking down any plastic pieces.  It appears the ends are stainless.  I could undo the window trim to investigate further if need be or if anyone needs pictures.

On this D headliner issue, here's a photo of the Millers' D that I took last month when Randy Thorne and I took a ride to visit Rita and son Tom. Perhaps this will help. I'll also be seeing them at a car show in early August and can take more photos, if needed.

That headliner was called the "Luxury" headliner for the D.  The windshield to rear window metal strips had plastic tips on them that disintegrated as did the thin fabric and foam backing.  300Ds with the side to side vinyl headliners were 300C replacements. Although some early Ds used leftovers from the 57 line as Chrysler often did..  Talk to those who owned one for a very long time and they will admit to making the change to the vinyl.  Vinyl was available but the luxury fabric wasn't.  Daryl was the first guy who made the reproduction.  It was perfect, but I'm not sure he was able to reproduce the plastic tips on the ends of the metal strips.

I believe that is the same extruded plastic piece that is used for 58 Plymouth. It’s clear plastic with a chrome inlay. I believe someone was reproducing this. But even if they aren’t the same, or I don’t have my facts right, this can be created using a 3D printer.

I don't know if it helps or not, but Daryl Miller had this headliner in his Tahitian Coral coupe.  It was restored and I recall that SMS Auto Fabrics did this for him.  Unfortunately Daryl has passed away and I can not ask him about it, but I do have pictures of his finished headliner.  I have attached one image to this email...would send them all, but didn't want to melt down anyone's computer.  LOL!

I consider this extrusion to be unobtainable.  On my original I am reluctant to try and remove it from the retainer; it will surely break.  I have a short piece to show the section.  I seem to recall Jeff Carter telling me that the Dodge B-Van using something similar. Also a short stainless end cap is used at each end.  Front cap is shorter than the rear.  With a fresh vinyl retainer installation would be a snap.  Comments welcome.

Hi Dave, John and Others,

Thanks for the info. It’s a car I’m looking at. I don’t have pictures of the complete headliner, but will have asked for them. I believe it has the longitudinal strips for the headliner. If I do, I’m happy to make whatever patterns you need.

I have been considering looking into having a small batch of this material made.  I have a sample of the squares.  Is it possible to make a paper pattern of your original so I can get spacing of the lines and the squares.

Thx

Dave

Sam didn’t say which headliner he has but let’s assume he has the rarer 3 piece cloth.   Attached is a picture of Jack Wiltse’s D with the rarer cloth 3 piece with longitudinal stainless retainers.  Not sure who has Jack’s car today.  Not my photo but I did view Jack’s car when he lived in Ypsilanti, Mi.

This is the headliner in my D.  I have not yet addressed how I will restore or replace my headliner but I did cover that base by obtaining the more common vinyl headliner from Gary.  Here are pictures of what it looks like up close

This is the fragile center section.  It look’s almost like speaker material.

You can see how beautiful it was when new.

Hi,

I need to replace the headliner on a 300D coupe. Is this a one-year only headliner and does anyone reproduce it?
