RE: {Chrysler 300}

My first new car was a ’61 Plymouth Valiant 2DHT.  I always thought Chrysler was testing consumer acceptance by getting several years of success under their belts before going whole hog. Chrysler, like others had made some glaring errors in the market place.  Once bitten, twice wary.  The little Valiant ammeter seemed stuck on the middle peg. But, yes—they were designed from the ground up so there was no left-over stash of generators and their regulators or any hide-bound rules holding up progress.

It’s possible that since the Valiant and Lancer were new designs, the engines and engine compartments were designed with alternators in mind.

Strange how the economy

Valent's and Lancers had

Alternators for 1960.

And the high end cars didn't.

A couple shots of a 300-F ‘short branch’ manifold setup and motor with wide-fin ‘61 alternator, as these small handful of P-a-M cars were equipped by Chrysler. Attached here.

Note that our late friend, Burt Bouwkamp, 300 Club member and Chrysler’s lead engineer at Daytona Speed Weeks on the sands in 1960, who was in charge of the 300-F Flying Mile racing project, referred to the ‘60 manifolds as ‘short branch’ and ‘long branch’ vs. what we commonly call short ram and long ram.

If interested, we’ve included videos on our Club’s website of our ‘Burgers with Burt’ afternoon gatherings with Burt.

Hi Rick,

As to later production F's coming with alternators, I rather doubt that.  My F came off the assembly on 7/27/1960 and the VIN is near the end of production.

Mounts to the head, not the block

Hi Rick,

Are the mounting holes you speak of in the front of the block?

If so, you need to contact Murray Parks for all the brackets from a 1961 or later car.

Simple!

Thanks Tony, I will consider that option. I do have an alternator and believe the mounting holes for the hardware are already there. [hopefully someone can verify this looking at the pictures] If I can't source the brackets I will have one made as per Dan Reitz instructions. I thought that I read somewhere that later production F's came equipped with alternators.
