Re: {Chrysler 300} 300k question

Hi Tom,

I can’t speak to the technical side of lead additive.  I used to use it but don’t anymore.  The valve seats may wear prematurely, but one way to look at it cost wise, is the following.  If you end up having to re do the heads in the future, but saved $5 a fill up by not adding the lead substitute, maybe it will add up to about the same cost.

I haven’t pulled heads that many times, to have them redone, but sometimes I also found that they needed it, to get the cooling passages cleaned, replace the valve guides and seals,  install new hardened seats etc. so they end up better.

So that’s why I don’t run it.   Not sure it does much anyway, as Ron says?

Tom –

You’re not blending zinc in the gas. The zinc is blended in the oil.

Back when the car was new, lead was blended in the gas. Adding a magic bottle of lead to today’s gas doesn’t accomplish what you want it to. Again, the key is blending the lead into the gas.

Ron

Thank you for this.

I thought the lead in gas prevented valve seat wear and recession by both cooling and lubricating the surfaces of the valve and seat.

I realize the valve guides must be lubricated by something, but will enough oil get to the valve and seat for zinc in the oil to protect them?  It would seem a more difficult challenge than blending zinc in gas.

Lead additives are a waste of money. People that use them don’t understand that, for lead to be effective, it needs to be blended in with the gas. It *is* a good idea, however, to use a high zinc oil, like Valvoline VR-1. If your engine is rebuilt or low mileage, use 10W-30. If it has high mileage, you may want to consider 20W-50.

I finally picked up the very original K that I bought a few months ago. My question for the group is whether these cars of this vintage require lead additive? It seems to run OK on unleaded but I know that that can be deceptive thoughts?
