Re: {Chrysler 300} Perry Mason

yeah, I remember the CHP official road test..135 ? for dodge ,like 115 Ford mph and chev, plus they had our 12" drums off our 300B on cop cars.. You know, those lousy brakes. (heads up, it's the lousy mechanic ,not the brake-that included me back then). Ummm, CHP tested brakes too. musta kinda worked. Just lucky? laugh.

Images frozen in my mind forever of Broderick Crawford wailing around a Ford going 115 like he was stopped, and cutting him off ,-----good brakes, I guess.

Dodge did ok at Nascar too, overshadowed by Chrysler, (it took a blower on a 312 Ford -57) to even be close; I love that 241-270-325 engine designed by our 300 friend Burt.!

I am in the middle of one right now. I measured it, it is shorter front to back than a modern 273.318 340 360, yet hemi heads ! 200 lbs lighter than 392 , around the same size as SBC. You have to see the front water pump casting to believe it, all in one piece , pump, motor mount, and head water connection , thermostat . They should have just kept that exact thing right to 2024.

Ran at indy qualifying twice, kept with Offy, scared them big time 55-56 , (same 270 cu in as them---but blew up . Private efforts, no real Chrysler R&D) .Indy changed rules to 331" if stock block ,to stop that. Forced mopar guys to destroked 331 /354 way too heavy for Indy .

It also won C Altered at nationals 5 years in a row 57-61 against 1000 SBC, (the whole 55 chev with small block crowd, including Jenkins amd Yunick) while  toasting the ramchargers big hemi Plymouth every year(same class). Ramchargers sort of leave him out of the recent book.....hmmm . Just say in passing, "a nice guy"
Guy's name was Billy Rasmussen. 55 Dodge  270 in 32 Ford called "going goat ",preacher out of Texas.   Homemade 4x2 ram manifold of exhaust pipes, I firmly believe ramchargers swiped his ram idea in 57, led to Chrysler using it. I mean you would notice ,right? when he won your class 5 years in a row. Into 12's  on 270 cu in? Ram part looks about 15" long, about the same as J/K , or max wedge --hmmmm.

I saw him in Maine,he  just walks away at top end with that Hemi sound....

Like you ,so impressed by all this,  still a HS kid though, so  later I bought a 57 D500 (red stripper convert stick  ?someone else fell, who saw those tests in 56-7) ; what a pig it was compared to the 56--state of tune of 56? weight? 57 had hydraulics.

Got my azz handed to me routinely by 57 pontiac automatic, really got to me. 347 cubes, but still. Pontiac was the big sleeper, faster than J2 olds too. Came out of nowhere, I thought of a pontiac then as that stupid straight 8 flatty with Plastic Indian on hood.

And that stick Chrysler transmission was a maximum dog of a trans  right though 61 or 62; worst stick shift made.  pin drive synchros break off the ring carrying them, if you shift fast (the point of having a big V8 stick) the pins drop right into gear mesh, BOOM. Would you believe 15 transmissions in the summer of 61? Could change in 20 min , (got rid of fine thread bolts in crossmember, to  1/4/20 allens with nuts) still remember 11 pm thrashes in yard with trouble light, right back to Route 2 lights at 1 AM .  Midnite auto as we called it (junkyard in Cambridge ) was source of the transmission pile. Over the fence with flashlight. 20' pipe with rope into side window of Plymouth flip on side grab trans in 20 min. Later, stick 392 would peel off teeth on first like corn on cob in first gear without touching the clutch , on top of the pin BS. Not glass gears by 61, but glass syncro pins there still. This gotta go---

Fixed all that with a 392 300D motor (had engine/underdash  harness fire=junked D .. no main  fuse ,go mopar)  and later a Packard OD , with "spark-O matic"  stick on floor from JCW. 19.95 I think.3800 lb B&B 11" clutch from Dodge oil  truck ,velvetouch metallic disc , (Boston Clutch built it for me) at the end of the summer 61 3;70  gear (that D motor cost me 250$ when making 50-75 a week) Packard has huge gears  maybe 1.25 wide ,huge cone type bronze synchros like on vette T10 4 spd. but twice as big >THIS, one could shift!

Best score of my life followed ,61 421 Pontiac Ventura coupe, gorgeous brand new titian red , red leather inside 4 speed,8 bolt aluminum wheels, . I won!!!  But----Cop caught us ,state trooper---- I was parked in front of Route 2 Bowling Alley--, off Lake st lights. ( I mean ,proves I won ) he gives pontiac a ticket for failing to stop and racing (600$ then) he comes up to me and says "What Ya got in this thing (still had D5oo on trunk) I go "392 hemi stick". He goes "do it yourself? " I say yeah. "  Do you think it would beat my cruiser?" We both start laughing (406 ford) .  He says, " I hate Pontiacs" . I say "me too" He let me go!!  we became great friends, a good guy Mass state cop now waves at you.....awwright!!  life was great then....Turn up Chuck Berry and go

Soon came max wedges and 15 or 20 425hp 409 62 black coupes, , all this ended . After that all you needed , even to today, was a dollar down for a fast car. =college for me. No $ . it was American Graffiti, for a very brief time -----except real

As far as winning forever , we have the 55=56 300's , Petty 1234 blue cars, all a lap ahead with first new hemi, then Baker hemi 220 mph. The 7 sec A/SA hemi barracudas(!) no blowers; all 16 cars Hemicudas. . They "race" Nascar now at ~190? not 220. Fair to chev and ford , --and Toyota. A match of equals.
Sorry , got long--you got me going!

Hi all,

I might add that 1956 Dodge D500's were prominent on Highway Patrol.  Probably the reason I bought one in June of 1956.

Leave it to  Beaver. Early cars Ford but in 1959 Cleavers went to Plymouth Fury and Plymouth  till the end. Background cars mostly Chrysler, Dodge  and Plymouth.  In last few years 63 and 64 several  300 sightings. Bachelor  Father -John Forsyth drove a 1960 New Yorker and maybe 300 F.

Sort of related.
I saw the yellow 66Newport convert used
In Good Fellows driven
By Henry/Ray Leota.
It was in Hampton Bays
Several years after the movie came out.
It had to be the same car
Had those 5th Ave wire wheel hubcaps  LOL.

Hi Rich,
That was from my 300G story for the Club News many years ago. I initially saw the movie on a black and white television. I knew the car wasn't black and presumed it was red. Gill Cunningham subsequently advised me the car was actually a cinnamon colored car. I've since seen the movie in color and agree with Gil.

There is a very brief shot of a red G convert sitting on the street in the movie Goodfellas right before a bar/ restaurant goes up in flames. Unknown whose car was used in that movie. Anyone know?

I recall that the old Perry Mason Show had primarily FoMoCo products: Paul Drake in a “Square Bird” convertible and Perry and Della (or a high roller suspect) in a Mark III, IV, or V…

As per this link the car used in the movie, The World, the Flesh and the Devil was a 1958 Chrysler 300D.  Based on this link that seems to be verified.  IMCDb.org: 1958 Chrysler 300 D Convertible [LC3-S 595] in "The World, the Flesh and the Devil, 1959"

I saw that episode as well.  Wasn't there also a sci fi show or movie that had a 57 or 58 in a dealer showroom that got driven out through the glass?

The other day I watched an episode of Perry Mason that was originally filmed on 11-8-58.  The name of the episode was: "The Case of the Married Moonlighters".  About 52  minutes into the show a 300D convertible made a brief appearance. The first scene showed the front of the car which one could see the bumper, grille, hood and windshield. The car had both outside mirrors. The next scene was Lt. Tragg getting in and sitting behind the steering wheel. Tragg had his hand under the dash looking for a lever that would open a metal box located just below the temp control lever. He was able to open the box and inside was a handgun.

The car was equipped with a (7) button radio, but not power windows. I can only imagine the thrill the owner had to see their car make it into a national tv show, or, did a dealer provide this beauty?

Where is this car?
