"Modest estimate", indeed! As the owner of 3N572517, a gorgeous
multi-year meticulously restored Gauguin convertible (my Dad's car
from 1968), I could only dream to get anywhere near that return
(whenever I finally have to sell "Big Red"!) I think the seller
is taking a big risk selling at "no reserve" in this
economy/collector market - and at Christmas, when most people are
focused on paying for gifts for family and friends.
From only ONE photo, it looks like a pretty car, but IF
it hammers at $250k, the buyer ends up paying $312.5k! I've been
watching the sales and auctions for 20 years and have never seen a
300C sell for that. Mr. Grinch is guessing around half that high
estimate, maybe $140k!
But Bonhams and BJ always bring out the big boys with big egos
and fat wallets, and they don't care about the hefty seller and
buyer premiums (Bonhams is now 25% extra for the buyer!) BJ
seller commission is listing fees plus 8% of hammer price and
buyer pays 12% surcharge.
I've gone to the Scottsdale BJ event for 20 years now, and it is
indeed an "EVENT", not merely a car auction! Not to be missed,
whether you're in the game or not!
