Bob. Since it was I who started the thread over a month ago on this topic, I reserve to myself the opportunity to close it out. ************** I have been loath to comment more on this subject as when I brought it up, I was accused by a member of this club of being some kind of “hater” of the work done by the CARB. Of course, this person spent his energy attacking me as the speaker and not what I was saying. As someone, and his wife, who made the choice decades ago before it was vogue to reduce our carbon footprint to a very low level and who decided not to have children in part in furtherance of that goal, I take exception to such broad accusations. We have lived in San Francisco for decades and we have on average driven between 3000 and 4000 miles a year combined. The California average per person drives about 12,000 miles a year. We have lived in a place where we never needed Air conditioning. We have limited our jet flying. In short out carbon footprint is better than 99% of the American Public. Even including our love of classic cars. Probably lower than most of the employees of the CARB. I spent some years when I was young as a Transportation Planner – Researcher. Included in that work was being in charge of a major survey project. I had to work with Professors at UC Berkeley, well know survey statisticians in San Francisco, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and others in its design and implementation. It is that experience that collied with the survey that the CARB is doing. I am not, nor have I ever been as accused, anti-CARB or its mission. But I am concerned when I see bad science being performed on the taxpayer’s dime and any possible side effects to the hobby good or bad. I have received several conflicting answers both directly from the CARB and indirectly via various contacts as to the exact nature and reason for this survey. None will discuss in depth the issues I have with it. In any event, the actual survey is scientifically flawed. I seriously doubt it would pass any peer review. It is statistically valid, as to mathematics, as far as I can tell. It is hopelessly flawed with regard to the underlying assumptions. Garbage in and Garbage out even if the math is fine. I am working with some legislative folks to look into this. I am also giving thought to opening a formal complaint with the State of California Auditor if the CARB does not address my concerns. The Auditor’s job is to make sure that government agencies are not wasting our money and this survey is waste of money not withstanding its purpose good or bad for the old car hobby. We have strayed into areas that are not within our primary focus; Chrysler Letter Cars. Let's move on and all will be fine.
