Re: {Chrysler 300} Removing starter on 1960 300f

Hi to all,

Yes, gear reduction starters are available for 413s with the cast iron torqueflite transmissions and have been for some time now.

The originals really seem to struggle compared to the newer gear reduction starters.

I worked with a company from down under (New Zealand?) and they have one. Rob Kern, help me out here. I know you had one put in your “C” years back.

George,

Here is the one I used. Yes, the 1959-61 engines use a different starter. I had to grind a little on the adapter ring for the starter but it was easy enough. The battery cable to the starter needs to be longer by about 6 inches. I used one from the relay to the battery and a second one from the relay to the starter. And then I just made a new signal wire. If you want original style battery cables, Quirey said they can make a longer set.  I also put one of these on my 1960 Chrysler wagon. And a couple friends have done several of them. Faster cranking and less draw on the battery. No problem starting my F after it sits for months.

Hi Nick, I wasn't aware that on the early 727 vast iron trans that you could use a mini starter.
Would it be possible for you to share the model number of the starter.
I was thinking of changing out the original one in my 300G.

Many thanks George

The top starter bolt threads into the starter from behind. You access it from the transmission side.

I put a mini starter in my F and very happy with it.

Marylin,

It’s been a few years since I had the starter out in my G, but I do remember using a long extension with a 5/8” (I think) socket and going over the top of the starter to reach the bolt. The F should be very similar.

Hi.  Marilyn Reed here.  I need to remove the starter on my 60 300f  to have it rebuilt.  We are having difficulty removing the top bolt.  Is there a special way to do this?  Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Marilyn
