RE: {Chrysler 300} Type F vs. Type A

FYI our old ATF contained Sperm Whale Oil, we ran out 1977.  Type A, F, Dexron no longer have the friction modifiers and oxidation/cleaning protection we were accustomed. Now we have modified fluids synthetics. Ford used Type F  1967 to 1977.  From what I have read, Japan, Iceland and Norway are still whaling. Maybe they have some good ATF and gear oil. Rick

Just as I thought, and have read before, Don - Thanks for the public confirmation - again!

No he does not. And I am done with trying to tell people not to waste their money on synthetic trans fluid that is NOT designed for older units.

I will delete any further emails on the subject.

Does Don Verity agree that ATF+4 is suitable for a 1957 Torqueflite, whereas he has long specified Type F for that application?   Even if so, is there any advantage to ATF+4 instead of Type F?  Is there a possible problem with ATF+4 being synthetic and perhaps not completely compatible with original friction and softgood materials (clutch bands, seals, etc)?

It seems that I have some cars that were filled with Dextron II and some with Dextron III as time has progressed.  So is Dextron III backwards compatible with Dextron II?  Given a brief search of the internet at the time of changeover, most were saying ATFIII is backwards compatible but not all replies agreed but most said they are.

Hi Don,

There is a Type FA. Any opinion whether it could also be used? It stands for Ford Automatic or Ford Anti Foaming Agents.

I heard that the original oils had Sperm Whale oils and no longer were available?

Here is a write up from the big block Ford site:

On the older shift kits from b&M they would recomend type F trans fluid for use in the brand x transmissions .the Type F helps give a firmer shift but doesn't hold up well to heat.

Type FA Transmission Fluid
Type FA is a high-quality transmission fluid specifically engineered to protect and prolong the life of automatic transmissions. It is designed for use where Ford specifications M2C33-F, M2C33-G and Ford Type F fluids are recommended.

•Provides excellent resistance against clutch slippage for extended transmission life
•Provides excellent resistance to fluid oxidation/breakdown at high temperatures
•Approved for 1980 and earlier Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles
•Approved for use in Mazda, Saab, Toyota, Volvo and other Japanese and European vehicles requiring a Type F fluid
•Other applications include air compressors, general purpose hydraulics and power steering systems
zoil A/C Compressor oil works good for modified high hp transmissions. type FA stands for ford automatic or ford anti foaming agents

Do not use type A. Go with Dexron III or type F. Either one will shift the same. Stay away from synthetics.

Hello, everyone:

I recent had a discussion with another "gearhead" regarding the friction modifier in Type F. He said type F would hold up better in high performance engines than Type A. Has anyone used Type F in their engines? Any recommendations?

Best,
