John, I am not sure I understand your last note. I am talking about the four bolts that pass through the holes in the manifold and such the header pipe up to it. The manifold does not have any studs, just bolts and nuts. I do know that one does not want the bolts to “thread” into the cast iron hole if that is what you mean. That is why I asked if the bolts are 3/8 inch or 7/16 inch. Since the shop will be doing the work, I want to give them the nuts and bolts and put a lot of high heat anti-seize compound on them as they probably would not.
I am spending the money to have them use those special clamps that allow for the easy removal of the pipes. These use collars that weld to each end of the pipe and use a big clamp that pulls the two sides together. They just cost about
$60 each! Since I know I must pull the trans in the next six months and I will probably pull and clean the gas tank, the ability to get the pipes out of the way is a good idea. James From: John Grady <jkg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> james , use smaller stainless bolts with nuts and washers , avoid threading into manifold at all . They are plenty strong , even as small as 1/4 is over 1000 lbs . but don’t go that small unless necessary. use split washer lock washers too as it changes size with temp . SS can “ gall” in iron threads you will break manifold ear off one day down the road Threads into exhaust manifold are always a bad idea . With nut you can always just cut it off .
