Hi
All,
After
a talk with Firm Feel on steering, they are 8 weeks out on rebuilds. I need
to get this car highway capable sooner than March so I can get it to my
upholster and paint shop for some minor work.
I am
going to stick in a core I picked up some time back in the hope it will be
in better shape.
It
appears that the rear problem with these boxes in not the worm or roller but
the worm bearings that wear out.
In
any case, does anyone have a unit out with the rubber isolator and the
plastic flat parts accessible? If so, I would appreciate it if you
could take a caliper and tell me the thickness of that plastic. I will order
some plastic sheets so that I can make some if the factory ones are torn
up. I just do not want to wait until I take it apart as my plan is to
swap the boxes in one day. Then send the factory box up to Firm Feel for a
complete rebuild using their Stage 1 level. I asked the owner about Stage 2
which most people get, but for us old folks and parallel parking here in San
Francisco he though we would be better off with stage one which is a little
more than the old later 1960’s police boxes.
It
has been 30 years since I took one of these out. If there is anything anyone
wants to add beyond what the service manual outlines, please tell me. Any
shortcuts are welcome. I will be doing this on my lift.
Thanks,
James
