Turn out the carb looks ok. Although I have a very slight surge at 35 MPH. As to the rebuild, I did not put just a kit in. I did everything short of replacing the shafts, which to my luck were just fine. I also ran through all the adjustments in the service manual. I made a rookie mistake. I set the timing with the vacuum advance attached. I reset the timing to 10BTC with the advance off, and then I set idle screws with a vacuum gauge to lean best idle (18 Inches) and then I took it out for another
test. Lit them up without any effort. No bog, no backfire. Kickdown is working as well. I should just kick myself in the ass… James From: Dan Plotkin <dplotkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Send it out. Send it to Daytona, or all American, or Kunz. They will run it on a test engine before they send it back. Putting in a “kit“ at home and what a good rebuilder does are not the same…I don’t do them at home anymore.

Yep a AFB 3614S. I went through the entire thing. I did however do it rather quick. I will have to double check it. James From: Dan Plotkin <dplotkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
The rubber isolator repair is a must – cannot enjoy a 300 with a steering wheel chucking back and forth. Don Verity made it look easy, did mine in under two hours, it will fix the horn too. Carb backfires are a lean condition, my guess
is no juice in the secondary, this is an AFB? Danny Plotkin From: 'James Douglas' via Chrysler 300 Club International [mailto:chrysler-300-club-international@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]
Thanks, Danny for the thoughts. I just took it out and road tested it. The steering box is shot. I suspect someone over did it at some point and wiped the piston (worm) and Sector gears out by over doing it. I have seen this before. I agree that the funky rubber isolator that goes on that flat blade at the end of the column is dead. I have done two full column rebuilds. On the old 300K Hardtop with tilt and the 300K Convertible with the standard column. I really did
not want to have to do it again, I was 28 the last time I did it, now in my 60’s not so much fun! The trans seems to like a not clogged filter and fresh fluid. It also seems to like having the kickdown adjusted close to where it is supposed to be. I could not test the kickdown however. Every time I floor it, it bogs and backfires. I think there is something wrong with the secondaries opening. I have a new Mancini Vacuum advance and when I tested the weights and the advance on my Sun Machine they both looked fine. I guess I will have to play with the carburetor more. I did do it in kind of a hurry. I have a 3615S core that I will try and do a slow rebuild on. I am told that the only difference in the 3614S is a slightly smaller air bleed. If I can
ID which bleed, I can drill it out to the 3614S specification. Although I doubt it would make that much difference. I will also check to see that the springs and weights on the step up rods are not hanging up as that can cause a similar issue as the secondaries.
If anyone has any other ideas on the full throttle bog, let me know. James From:

On Behalf Of dplotkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Mopar power boxes have a lot of play when unpressurized by the pump. That is not by itself a indicator of a problem. The "cocking" of the wheel, common on F & J is that rubber isolator in the
box, which Don Verity fixed for me. Knowing how is a big help. Danny Plotkin
-----Original Message----- Hi All, I fired up the 300K today. Other than one water hose leak, all the replaced water related items are not leaking. Lucky on that. The power steering pump so far no leaks with the
new seals. The replaced with factory dual point dizzy is fine, although I put a Pertronix unit in it. I have the dual point plate all set up and in a bag for the road just in case. The rebuilt AFB in place of the Edelbrock looks ok, but the choke fast idle
needs a little work. I think the little spring may be tired. Mt big issue is the steering. I put my alignment turning plates under the tires and went through the service procedure on adjustment. Or should I say I tried. I backed off the nut and tried to tighten the nut down to take all the slack out of the mesh and there was no more to get. I went through it three times. I suspect that some
idiot cranked down on the adjuster without following the factory procedure and wiped out the mesh. I guess my spare unit will have to go to firm feel. When I was putting on the steering wheel after the dash work, I noted it wanted to cock a little side to side. I suspect that
the runner isolator in the lower column is shot as well. So, I guess a full steering column and steering box rebuild in going to have to happen. I will test drive it in the morning and see what I get. Best, James --
