Re: {Chrysler 300} 64 radio fader/reverb unit

Hey Ray,
We know who Les Paul was here in Wisconsin. Les Paul was from here in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He has a road named after him. Very innovative and interesting biography.

Nice work . I should lift my head beyond 57-60 300! Although I had a J at one point .

While on FSM the organization of info vs years is interesting ! It seems in 57-61 they assumed you knew a lot from the immediately prior years , so did not reprint some of that . —— In particular JY pointed out to me and Bob Merritt did too the excellent heater information in 59 only FSM on the vacuum heater system ( first year was 59 ) I had never worked on an E .
I also learned really a lot about Torquflight by just reading about Powerflight in earlier manuals , 57 comes to mind as I never had earlier . That was dropped later . Much more explanation of trans stuff , I think they expected Chrysler mechanics knew PF operation from 54 (?) or 55 / 6 and just added TF data on top of stuff “ you know already”
While memory a little shaky I think I found out about how reverse blocker valve works in PF section . That valve can make you cry when not working right ( no R sometimes) Anyway , reading them like a novel almost , is very rewarding I think .

If you turned the reverberator on without radio it made an loud  noise when you hit a bump!

Hi , reverb is a cool thing !

Stereo was just coming out then and some early stereo recordings had highly enhanced “ separation” so you could show your friends that “effect “ =  wow its on the right or left“  etc .

So AM and early single channel FM receivers were at a big disadvantage . So Motorola came up with delaying the back sound 10’s of milliseconds , it sounded like a well designed concert hall  ( there , it happens by echo off the shaped walls , which takes a certain time  ) .

Stereo separation in a car back then was dicey too . I liked it!

The way it worked ( from reading about it then ) a small speaker ( transducer ) powered by rear speaker wires from main radio shakes a mechanical  coil spring , about the size of screen door spring , so sound travels a long path moving the spring .   , then a microphone type action picks it up at far end   .

But that greatly reduced the volume —so a transistor amplifier is in there running on 12 v boosts it back up .

The 12 v for that must come by the radio switch or acc switch ( on all the time running?  ) , so check that 12 V feed . The amplifier is subject to bad capacitors — over time they die , or early  semiconductors failing . Same as early radios . A good radio guy can fix that and should not be much money . If inclined go at it your self , find the Sam’s’ radio repair folder it is in , those are on eBay now . Will need it to fix right anyway . If not in FSM .

You will like it !

The unit just delays the signal from the Radio a few Microseconds to give an echo.

Sorta like Les Paul's Music (who remembers that?)

Like Danny mentioned, you would have audio in and out. Just disconnect, and join those wires to bypass the Reverb unit.

My L had this feature under the package shelf, but it's been toooo many years ago. While you have it bypassed, look into having the unit serviced, either at a local old time radio shop or with one of the vendors in the Club's publications.

Dave-

You likely have a Motorola Vibrasonic which the big 3 used with various names of their own. Should be nothing more than a box with 12 volt and ground supplied, and audio in and out connections. These are transistorized. I have one in a 63 Galaxie XL. My bet is a wiring problem. If it’s the unit John Grady may have some advice. Any old car radio guy should be able to fix it if the problem is inside.

My 64 K has an am/fm radio.

It has the reverb unit in trunk for rear speaker.

And, it stopped working a few years back.

Figures 11 thru 13 in the factory Manuel has

Some wiring details.

I figure to disconnect reverb and get the rear speaker to play.

Has any one dealt with this issue?

Good winter project to pull seats and console the trace the wiring.

Thanks,

In Dave's garage
