Richard-
I'm no expert and besides, I'm new here.
A discolored CAM otherwise free of damage or wear is fine. A blue, rough shaft has been oil starved. Discoloration in the absence of scoring or any defect to catch a fingernail is not wear in my view.
CAM replacement is not what it once was. Oils dialed back for emissions and the vagaries of off shore metallurgy have made CAM replacement risky. Machine shops I speak with tell stories about doing engines twice and three times from bad CAMs.
Given the complications atop the F & G motors CAM replacement is not a casual affair.
Proper CAM break-in is essential and comes with some risk. I wouldn't change a CAM on a preventative basis.
