Re: {Chrysler 300} FW: Hard starting 300G

All

I did exactly what Bob J did. I installed an electric fuel pump on my G and I hid the switch under the dash.  It starts without cranking very long. It is a easy fix.

Thanks

Some newer member may not be aware of the fix for hard starting when the car sits unused, so I’m sharing this tip.  I’ve had my 300G since 1978, and back then if the car sat for more than a few days, I would have to crank it quite a bit to start.  If it sat for a few weeks, I would have to prime the carb to get it to start.  The cure, as I learned from local 300 Club members back then, was to install an auxiliary electric pump to pre-prime the carb before cranking.  Attached is an early photo of the electric fuel pump installed on my 300G.  The pump shown has been updated to a much smaller unit, but the concept remains the same.  My car can sit for months, and all I do is turn on the key, press the “hidden” button to run the pump until the pumping sound slows, and turn it over for a quick start.  The mechanical pump is still installed and works as normal. I have thought the problem was modern CA gas (with ethanol)  evaporating faster than old gas, but evidently, judging from comments made, this happened even when the car was new, although I believe it to be worse now.
