Hi all Another down side to xtra Bright bulbs is the service Life is shorter. Every thing Is a trade off. But most collector cars only see occasional use so not a real Problem. Advance sells the Xtra bright 1156 and 1157 bulbs. Bob Haag On Aug 25, 2021, at 6:24 PM, Ray Melton <rfmelton@xxxxxxx> wrote:
That 1157 bulb rated at 50/15 watts is nearly double the wattage if the standard bulb, and is of course noticeably brighter. However, I want to pass on a caution: several years ago I had these 50w bulbs in my Jeep Cherokee, and
after descending a long, winding downhill road in the Colorado mountains, when I reached a stop in a town at the bottom, a fellow motorist pulled alongside and informed me that I had NO BRAKE LIGHTS! I checked and sure enuf, the continuous brake usage had
gotten the bulbs’s metal bases so hot that both bulbs melted themselves out of the plastic housing and were shining brightly while dangling in the rear fenderwells! Probably okay in all-metal housings.

Hi John and all.
My mistake. My bulb is a halogen and not an LED. The description is as follows:
Candlepower
12V50/15w
Halogen bulb
#H1157
Made in Korea and not China
LED bulbs are much brighter and efficient but heavier on the wallet. I don't recall what I paid for the Halogen but a lot less than what LED's are going for now.

hi do you know the brand or any details of getting the led bulb that worked ? 100’s out there many are chinese junk . most I tried were marginal —-but time has passed .
FYI i experimented with Philips 8 watt MR-16 type show window type reflector led , really bright , white .
although made for 12 ac , they work fine on DC . I learned about them from 12 v dc solar house setup. Only one filament but could ? add another bulb in the F space in tailight back plate .
I did this on backup lights , and on 57 dodge taillight for stop . Have to improvise .

Compliments to John Lazenby, I converted to led's on my F several years ago. Work like a champ. Use my closed garage door to test before I drive the F
Obtained an under the dash brake light switch from an H and have no problems with hydraulic fluid deterioration.
Also, I use yellow filament bulbs in the front turning signals.

LED replacements have gotten better over the years but the LEDs need to be located in the same general area as the filaments in the old bulbs in order for the relectors to work properly.
Hi All;
I second the fact that if using silicone the mechanical stop light switch will fail after a few years use, always carried a spare. I valued long term brake storage benefits of silicone over a $10.00 replacement switch on a GM vehicle.
I am not an EE, yet converted our 300F to LED tail lights this year. When installing in taillight buy the red bulb, and directional will only work with a LED flasher which has a separate ground wire. My flasher had a different pin arrangement so I ran
a set of wires up under the dash. Been working fine after 1500 miles this summer.
A good source for quality bulbs and flashers are vendors servicing the street rod guys. A vendor I have used is Watson's Street Works. I have seen bulbs and flashers which should work at NAPA. Suggest DOT rated as many brands are not.
