Re: [Chrysler300] 1961 300G steering pump is too loose....

You can also replace the setup by drilling the worn  holes larger , on center , then using a threaded rod , lock washers , nuts and a pipe like spacer like a mopar alternator mount . Then you can adjust as normal ; tighten to normal tension .  at one point I did several F with a correct length Allen bolt and another time a shoulder bolt ( expensive , hard to find) . Looks stock but no more grief . Shoulder bolt allows you to clamp only at front tab — back two places not clamped . Back hole larger than front then  , thread of shoulder fits front hole , clamp is made between shoulder and nut on front . All this from memory of long ago .
A major shortcoming is the rubber wedge gets oil soaked falls apart or is missing in stock setup , but even worse the front hole wears more with all the rocking so you can easily see the pulley is tilted as is the pump axis , looks like hell . Place yardstick on pulley.. all pulleys in same parallel plane
I have seen “ restored “ 300’s with pump obviously out of square , leading to slipping  of driving belt. Whole idea of self adjusting by a loose fitting  bolt in plain steel hole is plain garbage . All PS pumps except this short and failed experiment are rigid mounted — and the stock  bracket can be made to be rigid , the pipe spacer lets you squeeze it down tight with a long bolt
Someone mentioned the later GM Saginaw pump ,—  I did that too . Great pump ! However Saginaw outputs about 1000 psi ; probably ok for 59 up later PS box , but coaxial box on 57,58 (59? I don’t   think so )  needs 800 . There is an answer — CPP sells an easily swapped output fitting for 800 psi out of Saginaw . Hot rod  guys use that with the mustang rack , also 800 . Good place to buy pump too .  I made brackets myself , but someone mentioned later B block works . CPP also sells hoses custom.
I Also found out recently that the local Napa store has a hydraulic hose making setup in back. They made up a hose for Saginaw to 57 coaxial box in 15 minutes . Had to have a metal splice in middle ( like some mopar stock ps hoses) due to different diameter hoses .   They had that . Worked out great
Hope this helps ,
John

  Chris,
I hope you were able to adjust your power steering pump belt with Bob's video, but if the pump still jumps around after tightening, your bracket may be worn. The holes in the bracket where the long lower bolt goes will wear out and need to be repaired. You can remove the bracket and have the holes welded and redrilled. The rubber bumper was missing on my bracket and I replaced it with a piece of high-density rubber about 1/8 inch thick and 1 inch wide and 2 inches long... I just let it slide down the gap between the two halves of the bracket.

Hi Chris,

Go to our club website Tech Department. Bob has a short, concise video about adjusting the power steering bracket which I think addresses your problem. It's kind of a weird self-tensioning/while running setup. In other words you don't adjust the belt "tight" like most cars

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Is there really just one, half inch nut on a three inch bolt holding the steering pump tension for the belt? I tried everything and still won't get tight. I'm afraid I'll snap the bolt if I continue to over tighten... Thanks in advance.
