Hi Larry,

Had the same problem with my first car, a 68 german Ford.

Someone put on the wrong cap and the gas tank shrunk from 55 Liter to 17 (!)

Replaced the tank and drilled a small hole in the cap – simple and effective solution.

My first complete restoration of a classic was a 1951 Cadillac convertible back in the eighties. Beautiful award winning work except it would drive fine for 45 minutes and then just quit. Wait 15 minutes and it would startup and run for another 45 minutes before quitting again.. Couldn't make a complete parade route without getting the hook. Tried all the vapor lock tricks to no avail so sold the car to a buyer in France. Weeks later I read an article addressing the situation and the author suggested that if a car needed a vented cap and didn't get one, the tank could suck itself flat or at least not allow fuel to flow and starve the carb. Waiting a while would allow the tank to vent somewhere and restart fuel flow again. His suggestion was to drill a small hole in the cap. Did you learn that Mr. French?

Every gas tank has a vent tube,
so why vent the gas cap as well?

To confuse further, not all letter car years have vented caps.

A quick check and I find 56, 57 have non vented caps
so I'd venture to say 55-59 have non-vented
caps. This might be because the filler necks are so high above the
fuel tanks.
With that thought,
the low profile gas tanks that came out in 1960 likely have
vented caps. A quick check of 1962 and 64 says caps are vented
so I'd venture 60-65 are vents.

What say you?
