I can?t comment on the preferred gasket but will pass on a trick I saw my
transmission mechanic pull.  Laying the pan inner side up on a sturdy steel
workbench, he used the round end of a ball-peen hammer to create outward
bulges at each bolt hole.  This added some spring tension around the bolt
holes when the pan was installed and hopefully overcame years of deforming
the steel around the bolt holes in the other direction.  I think this was on
a PowerFlite but seems like a good idea on any old pan.

Regarding gaskets, cork does compress over time and allows/requires snugging
up of the bolts.  Rubber, perhaps less so.

Is using the most expensive gasket the best choice?  What was stock and what
is best now?  My mechanic did not want to use the basic rubber gasket.
