One reason was that the high-performance dual-carb, ram-inducted engine became optional in 1964. The high-performance mystique of the 1955-1963 letter-cars came with the single-carb cars but at a reduced price, easier to maintain and less scary. Deem it a marketing success which is always the bottom line. The Firepower 390 package retailed for $375 on a $4,043 base-priced 1964 300K 4DHT, or a little over 9% increase. Others may have other reasons for the reduced cost. I’m not familiar with the cost of a 300K vs a 300L.
