OOOPS!!  You said it cranks but didn't start.  My neutral start switch response was inappropriate.   My best guess is at first attempt you simply didn't have enought gas in the intake manifold to fire it.  When you came back later you likely squirted some in with the accelerator pump and it started right up.  You might have been relying on the choke too much and it might not have been fully enough closed, especially considering that fuel level in the carburetor bowl goes down from evaporation while the car is not being used.    If put away at operating temperature that fuel loss is faster than if just run in place for 5 minutes and shut off.
