RE: [Chrysler300] 1961 Cross Ram Manifold For Sale

Note corrosion at one choke well in the picture. ...When you see that, they
might have a hole in the heat plenum under carb. The first F I ever had , my
first 300, had that problem, drove me crazy for a year. Could not get it to
idle right , erratic. Why the ram AFB idle mixture screws are often
wrecked...Cause of the poor running was exhaust gas was leaking into intake
side , due to corrosion , possibly melting the floor and area near the choke
well and under carb , separating intake plenum from exhaust heat area**
..This was in turn caused by a stuck heat riser valve ; they stick when
parked a long time cold , they rust in place shut. If you drive hard, a jet
of very hot exhaust hits that area like a blow torch.

One thing I learned early on, was that ram manifold cars make a distinctive
rattle as they warm up , when that spring loaded heat riser valve is working
right. (back then, ears worked too) . I remember that rattle on a friend's
brand new 61 Plymouth 383 stick wagon, (what is that rattling??--we both
are searching under hood of brand new car ?) and also on Mass Pike 413 ram
cop cars (might have been right behind me at the side of road--for some
reason....!) . later I disabled that valve , tied it open or removed
butterfly (looks stock) , as we do not drive our cars in zero weather.
Enough will still go through , to make chokes work but slower . George
reduced it even more with a 1/4 hole in a disc at heat elbows.

**On that one I fixed it with epoxy, poured it in from one side, tape on
other ---not sure if that was wise, (temp rating?) but it did fix it , and
I left heat riser open.

FYI, picture reminded me of this..
