RE: [Chrysler300] Barrett-Jackson Auction

These things about numbers are funny to me. I will gladly pay 10 -15 under market for an F with no HP stamp on block … depends on buyer I guess. Many “numbers matching” cars , especially in GM world, belong to people who never worked on them, inherited them from a granddad who left it sitting in a garage for 40 years, vs. someone who knew what they were doing and worked on and drove the car…which means replacing things. Latter group can also get it all correct, often do, so no criticism intended at all in any of this, but if you have a poor old rust free F with mismatched numbers ,15 “ wheels, rams in trunk, and wrong color at a low price, I am in. I am not in for a sneaky rust one , bondo baby with a pile of official papers , perfect stamps, original battery acid etc etc etc., And we all know about grandfather’s ax.

I guess it comes down to driving the car for what it is, to be enjoyed , as Noel does, vs. how much is it worth this year? = How do I get that number up? Different values/different folks..and that is OK.

I once read of a guy with 75 k in a red D convert babied it hand  washed it car cover etc. One day he said to himself, ”I am saving my car for someone else to drive !!! And he jumped in on East Coast and went to California, big road trip stone chips have fun. I envy that guy, want to do that, but I stall at the gate,…..

Spoken as a guy who had a radio delete red 4 spd hemi Cuda , 4:11 dana , bought for 8 sold in 90’s for 35, now worth? A million? Lousy car , really, cannot get power to ground, nose heavy. Old saying , when they were new, 340 beats 440, 440 beats hemi. Often true in the real world. 273 65 4 spd dart, or 63 426 max wedge -- might beat all of them. But someone just wants one—irrational. . May you get what you wish for…like driving on ice. Unless heavily modified.

Why Studebakers do OK, even win  the pure stock drags all the time…not hemi mopars.  12 sec, light car, ancient engine design, 289 and 301 cu in. . . But I love our 300’s , best driving cars car ever made. Fantastic engineering. Room under the big 300 tent for everybody!!

Along this line, I really like the new club motion about non  letter 300 and same year Mopar  (55 to 65 ) being included and welcomed at our meets . Good guys, maybe cannot afford a 300 now, but share our appreciation of them. . As a dodge D500 guy since 56, CHP, Broderick Crawford (actually who knows when), it is interesting to me the money they bring now, the converts, ( I had 4 - 57 converts  over the years, I junked one D500 stick convert way back ---arrgh) Desoto Adventurer , 57-58-59 Fury too. More $ than our cars,  at times..59 D500 convert for 220K this year??….(would rather have a 57, myself, but not at 220—maybe 22---).

Not so much numbers, but letters.

The F’s and G’s should all have “HP” stamped on the boss of the block in addition to the ‘41’

Let me ask a possibly dumb question. I was told “Numbers Matching” didn’t begin until 1967 or thereabouts. Hence, unless it was say a 383,how would you know ?

Thanks,

I haven't seen this G, despite being in touch with them they didn't come two hours to the Elkhart Lake '16 national meet. He tried to buy a G engine block off of me so it probably has an incorrect engine. So, the price doesn't seem too crazy low to me. There may have been a G coupe or two that sold for more, but from what I hear those were the outliers. So the important point is YES let's drive and enjoy them, and pay less for insurance. And maybe some young people will look at these as affordable and take some of them on. If you are worried about values my opinion is we will soon be running out of rich old guys who want these cars.

Having seen the car, up and down and knowing it belongs to one of our members, I regret that the car didn’t command a higher price. In my somewhat limited view, this car was done right. At $57k (and if that’s advertised, then the buyer’s fee of 10-12% has been added to that number), this car sold at just over $50k. Wow what a car for that price. I would have thought that car would have sold well into the $60’s. If this is where the market is going for our letter legends, time to just sit back, put the pedal down and enjoy them.

Good Morning,

The G sold at Russo and Steele on Saturday for $57,000.... There is a great app called Hammer Price that shows all of the big auction results, plus pictures of each of the cars. I installed the app last year at Barrett-Jackson and it has performed great! Hope this helps.

Hi All, I was at BJ’s today. Had a car running. Auction started slowly. The ’62 came from Temecula and was sold at McCormick’s Palm Springs Auction last Nov. for $42, net of buyer’s fee. It resold today for $40k net of buyer premium. The car was much better than the price it got. Timing is everything and running 15th in the auction when there are dealer exotics and some quirky stuff ahead of it, doesn’t do us any good. I also went to Russo and saw the 61 G. It was very well done and a crisp presentation. I just hope when the weather set in today and the rain came that it showed well in the evening. We left before it ran, so hope someone has the info to share..
