Due to the unique color of this 300F, it cannot loose its background nor its history (at least in my experience). The color is not true red, but somewhere between a true red and a mauve color. Quite pretty, but not a genuine 1960 Chrysler color.
I first saw it at the Barrett-Jackson auction in January 1998. The owner at that time told me that the color was terra cotta, that only four terra cotta F convertibles were made, and that this was likely the only survivor of the four that were made. I have a terra cotta F hardtop, so I knew immediately that the seller was plainly incorrect about the terra cotta color. Also, several list server members immediately responded to my email at that time saying that they each had a terra cotta F convertible. Obviously, more than four were made!
At that time, the data plate had an 842 body code which is correct for an F two door hardtop. An F convertible should have an 845 body code. When it went across the auction block, BJ said that it was a "made" car. Maybe one of Dave Glassel's?
About 1 1/2 years ago, this car again went across the auction block. At this more recent time, interestingly, the data plate had an 845 body code. Maybe this is why the data plate currently looks a little strange? The fact that the VIN plate is rivoted suggests to me that it may have also been changed to adopt the VIN of a true F convertible.
I would suggest careful investigation to any potential purchaser.
