RE: [Chrysler300] 64 tailpipe brackets

Dave:

Thanks for your post.  I stand corrected.  Good point about the brackets that support the exhaust manifolds on the J’s & K’s.  Properly installed, they take some of the stress from the connections to the block.  In the 1964 Parts catalog:  Page 9-25 (Picture) and 9-45 (Description) for Items 9-48-77 and 9-48-86—Brackets and spacers.  If spacers are lost, flat washers should work just fine.

Regarding the J-K header supports.

There are 2 support plates mounted to 2 of the oil pan bolts on either side.

Longer bolts and flat washers needed to clear the flange on the oil pan.

They extend out and upwards somewhat and have 2 slight bends in each to compensate for the higher location of the mounting boss in/on the lower/main header pipe.

Ironic the last 3 digits, huh, “426”

The 1964 Parts and Service manuals don’t seem to show any supports for the exhaust system other than at the muffler’s outlets and at the end of the tailpipe. Apparently, the supports at the rear of the mufflers are attached to brackets fastened to the bottom of the floor pan. If additional supports are common, are there any details on best practice and location? Supports similar to those at the rear of the mufflers could be added to reinforce and support the joints at the muffler inlets. Provision for thermal growth and engine oscillations and vibrations would be required.

1959-1962 ram-engine exhaust and header pipes had varying degrees of support between the exhaust manifolds and the muffler inlets. It would appear that Chrysler engineers felt that the big cast-iron exhaust headers on the J & K engines would adequately support the front end of the exhaust system. A glance at the ’70 hemi exhaust system shows the first support is also at the mufflers’ outlets.

That said, I’m having to deal with a ram-K exhaust header with one of the four bolt holes torn out. There was not that much “meat” around the bolt holes. No telling how it was damaged but it looks like an installation or removal error.

Dave, 300 List

The long exhaust manifolds for the Short long ram, require support to hold up the exhaust pipe. If installing the pipe without proper support, the four bolt flange at the connection can break, from what I've heard somewhat easily. Can anyone send a picture of these supports for the exhaust / tailpipe "Installed", and possibly a dimensioned sketch, with mounting points. Any assistance is Greatly appreciated! I think this question fits in this "64 Tailpipe brackets" string, Thanks again!

Thanks for all the support on the K tail pipe hangers.

I found them as B body, the rubber straps need to measure up to your pipe.

And this is the last I'll say about them.

Thanks again,
